A captivating journey through a century of racing, rivalry, and remarkable feats at Le Mans.

Richard Williams, an award-winning author, brings to life the fascinating tale of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, an event founded by a group of Frenchmen in 1923 that continues to captivate fans, drivers, and manufacturers alike. This endurance race has long been a stage for the world’s leading car makers, from the early days of Bugatti, Bentley, and Alfa Romeo to later legends like Ferrari, Jaguar, Mercedes, Aston Martin, Ford, Porsche, Audi, and Toyota. Their fierce competition has fueled the race’s enduring appeal.

The book also explores the rich folklore surrounding Le Mans, featuring quirky anecdotes such as sealing leaking petrol tanks with chewing gum, a driver’s final pit stop for a champagne toast, and a woman racing through the night in a fur coat. The diverse cast of competitors has included royalty, debutantes, spies, and even drug smugglers, adding to the race’s mystique.

Le Mans has inspired Hollywood legends too, with Steve McQueen starring in the 1971 film Le Mans and James Mangold directing Le Mans ’66 in 2019. However, the race’s history also holds tragedy, notably the 1955 disaster that claimed 82 lives and threatened the future of motor racing.

From the daring Bentley Boys of the 1920s to record-breaking champions like Jacky Ickx and Tom Kristensen, and modern heroes such as Allan McNish, this book celebrates the courage, skill, and engineering brilliance that have made the 24 Hours of Le Mans a global icon.
