Beskrivelse

Discover the Azores, a stunning archipelago of nine islands in the heart of the Atlantic, perfect for nature lovers and adventurers. This guide offers 105 walking routes across the islands, showcasing the breathtaking landscapes and unique volcanic terrain.

A comprehensive walking guide to exploring the diverse landscapes of the Azores archipelago.

Located just a four-hour flight from London, the Azores consist of nine islands: Santa Maria, São Miguel, Pico, Faial, São Jorge, Terceira, Graciosa, Flores, and Corvo. This Portuguese archipelago is a paradise for those who appreciate untouched nature and solitude.

The scenery here is nothing short of dramatic. Lush forests blend seamlessly with rolling hills and deep-blue crater lakes. Towering extinct volcanoes rise skyward, while numerous steep valleys carve through the volcanic rock. Coastal areas, often challenging to access, are surprisingly fertile and heavily cultivated.

From countless scenic viewpoints, you can take in spectacular sights of volcanic craters, shimmering lakes, undulating countryside, and striking coastlines. The islands also feature fumaroles, hot springs, and thermal bathing pools, adding to the natural wonders on offer.

The walking options are diverse, ranging from gentle strolls through meadows, forests, and along the coast, to demanding mountain hikes-such as ascending Pico, Portugal’s highest peak.

Roman Martin, who has explored the Azores repeatedly over the years, presents this Rother Walking Guide with a selection of 105 routes. Each route includes detailed GPS data available for download, along with essential highlights, clear route descriptions, map excerpts showing the paths, elevation profiles, and helpful tips. This guide equips you with everything needed for an unforgettable walking holiday in the Azores.
