This two-volume work features 16 thematic chapters written by 25 experts, accompanied by a catalogue of 51 entries, including archaeological finds and objects documented as lost. It examines the shaping and installation of these golden masterpieces, crafted to honor the Lord and serve the needs of congregations, clergy, and church benefactors.

New insights emerge through technical and scientific analyses of materials such as wood, fire-gilded copper plates, and precious rock crystals, supported by dendrochronological dating. The book interprets the iconography, liturgical roles, and stylistic details of each piece, offering a close reading of altar inscriptions and tracing the history of these altars and crucifixes since the Middle Ages.

Additionally, it highlights the 19th-century musealization process that preserved nearly all of these remarkable artifacts.
