A tribute to Walter Chandoha’s timeless and affectionate cat photography that influenced generations and defined animal portraiture.

On a chilly winter night in 1949, Walter Chandoha, then a young marketing student and aspiring photographer in New York City, found a stray kitten in the snow. He wrapped the little cat in his coat and took it home, not realizing this encounter would inspire his future. Naming the kitten Loco, Chandoha began capturing its image, sparking a passion that led him to photograph kittens from a nearby shelter and launch a remarkable career.

Long before social media made cats internet celebrities, Chandoha’s images charmed the public across various platforms-from advertisements and greeting cards to jigsaw puzzles and pet food packaging. His photos are a blend of heartfelt affection, dedication, and impeccable technique. His signature glamorous lighting highlighted each cat’s fur with stunning clarity, setting a standard for animal portraits that influenced artists like Andy Warhol, who drew inspiration from Chandoha’s enchanting cat portraits for his own illustrated cat book.

Cats opens the archives of this pioneering artist, featuring a rich collection of color studio and environmental portraits, black-and-white street shots, vintage cat show photos, and tender moments combining his children with cats. This volume is not only a celebration of these charming animals but also a homage to a remarkable photographer who passed away in 2019 at 98, whose compassion shines through every frame.
